Foundations - Learning Plan

What is your long term goal or career pathway?

  • To have a well rounded understanding of full-stack.
  • To work with companies to design and build websites and apps.
  • To develop my own products.

What are my strengths and limitations concerning learning?

Strengths:

  • Empathetic: allows me to participate with team work in a non-judgemental way and to consider the user.
  • Open-Minded: helps me stay open to new ideas and solutions.
  • Creative: Creative thinking and aesthetic values to help me create useful and beautiful projects.
  • Idealistic:A strong idealistic compass helps focus on what is best for the user in terms of accessibility. It also ties in with my integrity and allows me to hold myself to a high standard.

Limitations:

When working on a technical problem I tend to take on a completionist gaming mentality:

  1. I try to attain every trophy.
  2. On some level, my brain tells me I need to beat all the bosses on my own to get the credit.

While this has served me in a lot of ways, it sometimes ends up look a bit like this:

  1. I turn into a perfectionist.
  2. I hack away at problems without asking for help (aside from Google searches).

The key limiter for my learning and career development when this happens is an increase in inefficiency and missing out on learning.

Some of the non-technical human skills I would to develop while at Dev Academy

  • Coaching
  • Building trust
  • Communication

As part of my commitment to how I will manage my workload in this programme, I will endeavor to:

  • Focus on maintaining a reliable schedule, sticking to regular business hours at minimum.
  • Communicating in a timely manner through appropriate channels with professional decorum.
  • Use empathy.
  • Actively listen.
  • Take feedback on board.
  • Give appropriate feedback in a constructive and caring way.

What I will do when things are building up and starting to get to me:

I will proactively manage my workload with scheduling and regular breaks. If needed I will find an appropriate way to step back and collect myself. If necessary I will reach out to the appropriate facilitators, friends, family or counselors.

A commitment as to how and where I will seek help in a timely way:

I will keep track of my workflow and performance, if I find myself not progressing and needing help, I will reach out to facilitators and other students where appropriate.

What I expect from the facilitation team

Timely communication, help and appropriate feedback.

Scheduling information:

For the duration of the course, I am committed to full-time attendance. I prefer to keep Saturdays free to spend time with family.

Bootcamp - Learning Plan

What is your long term goal and/or career pathway?

  • To have a well rounded understanding of full-stack.
  • To work with companies to design and build websites and apps.
  • To develop my own products.

What do you think your biggest strengths and limitations will be in Bootcamp?

Strengths

  • Clear communication
  • Empathy
  • Problem solving

Limitations

  • I can get caught up on mastering a small parts of a project before moving on. I have started to consciously set them aside, at least until I have finished the project and have time to revise, but there's still room for improvement.
  • As I mentioned in my Foundations learning plan, I still need to actively manage my 'completionist' mindset at times.

What do you think your biggest non-technical challenge at Bootcamp will be?

Balancing time management and learning - the Bootcamp is very rigorous and time intensive, but I will need to make sure I am taking everything onboard.

What non-technical skills - human skills - would you like to see developed in yourself while at Dev Academy?

My toolkit of problem solving techniques and processes.

What are your expectations from the Bootcamp team?

Timely communication, help and appropriate feedback.

What are your expectations of yourself on Bootcamp

That I will work hard, stick to schedules, communicate clearly and stay engaged with the flipped classroom strategy. I will stay true to my goals and prioritise my learning.
